Devotion To God

"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Deuteronomy 6:5

What does your Devotion to God look like? Is it praying for hours on your knees or laid out before God? Is it singing your heart out to worship music? Is it seeking God's word? There are many ways that we can have devotion. I know for myself my devotion consists of all 3 forms praying, worship and reading my bible. Now there are some that I do more than others, worship being one of them . I love to sing and just express myself through music I could honestly worship for hours on end. I will and have caught a royal attitude when my worship session had been interrupted ( as you can see I don't play about my worship haha)

Definition of Devotion is : love, loyalty,or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause

Why do we need to have daily devotion?

When I hear the word devotion the word discipline comes to mind. Why Discipline? When you have discipline you are consistent and dedicated. You also have order and direction, so for me when it comes to devotion to God that is what I want. God wants for us to have daily devotion with him because first he created us to worship him and also he is a jealous God and he does not want us to put anything or anyone above or before him ( I mean could you blame him?)

Someone may be reading this and say that devotion is not that deep or important. Some may say "I go to church I hear the word, I engage in worship and read scripture why does it matter what my devotion outside of church looks like. Now, all of that is awesome I don't want to down play that, however its not about what you do in front of people that matters, its what you do when no one is looking. It's easy to have someone tell you to do something and you do it ( such as lift your hands and worship, bow your head and pray or turn to a scripture and read along) but your real hearts posture is shown when no one is around, you are by yourself, it is just you and God what you do in regards to your walk with God is what God is looking at.

Food For Thought?

Are you willing to deny your flesh and what YOU want to do, to do what GOD wants you to do? Are you willing to sacrifice and be obedient? What are you willing to give up?

To start off God wants to have an intimate relationship with us. Think of it as a relationship with your boyfriend/girlfriend or spouse. In a relationship you want to spend quality time with your loved one, talking, getting to know one another, know their likes and dislikes, etc, that's how our devotion to God should be. In a relationship you take time out of your busy schedule and you make time for that person. God wants us to do the same for Him. Devotion is us saying "you know what, I really want finish this show but instead I am going to turn it off and spend an hour or more before God. You may feel or hear God speaking to you and telling you to disconnect from what you are doing and spend time with him. The question is will you listen and take heed? or is fulfilling your flesh more important?

Lately this has been my life. I will be midway into a show or movie and I will hear the Lord say spend time with me and for some reason its always at the part where its about to get good. I will be honest I really don't want to turn it off and there have been times that I would pretend as if God did not just speak to me plain and clear and I'll finish what I'm watching. Who knows God could have something he wants to share with me or show me in his word but because of my disobedience I could've missed out on something life changing. Being sensitive to the Holy Spirit is a big part in devotion as well.

I want to also throw in there that when you are spending time with God and your just in his presence make sure you let him speak to you, don't just do all the talking (praying) and then go about your business. Sit before him and just give Him that space to speak to you. The Holy Spirit will let you know when God is done.

Taking time on a daily basis to have devotion with God you will start to see a change in yourself. The way you think and view things. You will start to walk in his likeness, know God on a deeper level, see ourselves through the eyes of our lord and savior, find our purpose, get revelation, answered questions and the list goes on. There is so much that you can learn just by spending quality time with God. If you do not know what God says about how we are to live and conduct ourselves the best advice I can give is to open that Bible up Jesus shows us how we are to conduct ourselves and how God sees us and what he says about us and our life. The Bible is our blueprint to life.

How I do my Daily Devotion:

I want to give you guys an idea of what your devotion could look like. Everyone has their own but this is how I do my daily devotion. I get up between 7:00-7:30 ( weekdays) and 9:30 am (Saturdays) I can't sleep past 9:30 =( anyway I get ready for the day and I am driving to the train station to go to work I am praying and listening to worship music ( sidebar: I try not to pull out of the driveway without praying for safe traveling mercies and praying again car accidents and incidents).

When I get to the train station I have about a good 10-15 mins until my train comes so I will pull out my bible app on my phone and I read my devotional plan for that day, read the scripture and meditate on the devotion and scripture while on the train. Throughout the day I will have random moments where I will just start thanking God or speaking in tongues. When I leave work I am listening to worship music and taking deep breaths after a long day. When I get home I relax and watch some TV and interact with the parentals and an hour before bed I will open my bible and get in the word, I may do another bible devotional and then I will pray and go to bed. Its not difficult but sometimes....no most times the flesh does not want to do what your spirit wants.

God wants us to have the best, live the best, enjoy life, be blessed, and to be a vessel for the kingdom and I am sure there is more but we would be here all day. So I challenge everyone and even myself to spend time with God everyday be intentional!! If you're already spending time with God awesome spend more time with God, dig deeper get into the meat of the word start dissecting it, and watch what happens in your life.
