Devotional : Who said that?

As as child and even as an adult but more so a child, the words spoken to us, shape us and have such an impact on how we maneuver through life. Words can build you up and words can tear you down. As we grow older we learn how to receive or reject certain words that people will put out. We learn that we don’t have to accept everything people say about us or to us.

A year or two ago I saw a trend on social media in which the teachers would have their students say affirmations before they would enter the classroom. Some would have mirrors and the kids would look into the mirror as they affirmed themselves. I am not sure if you have seen this trend on social media. It was refreshing seeing teachers break the mold and start to uplift and empower our youth. The smiles and confidence that you beamed from their faces as they said “ I am smart”, “I am beautiful”, “I am a good person”, “I am strong and independent “ was beautiful.

Some people would see that and think thats cute that they are teaching them to think positive about themselves or building their self- esteem. Yes, they are doing those things but they are also awakening the greatness that lies within. Having them see themselves in a way that could ignite a self assurance that they can carry throughout their life. They are speaking life to something that has yet come into fruition.

The word of God does the same thing. When you read and speak the word of God , you will see how he views you, how you are to carry yourself, and what he created you to do. Going back to the previous devotion (Knowing God for yourself.. go check it out if have not already) when you know God for yourself and have that relationship and solid foundation, your not easily moved by people. You may have people say all types of things to you or about you and it will hurt and sting a little bit. But because you know what God has already declared and said in his word about you, you can bounce back, throw your reverse card , rebuke the lies and speak life into the atmosphere.

There may be someone reading this who may have a battle going on within themselves, because of things people have said to them over and over again. Maybe it’s your past and it’s consistently being brought up, being held over your head and your being placed in that box with your past. Therefore you feel like they are right and your whoever they say you are based on how they feel and see you. I am here to tell you that your past does not define who you are today. You are not who you were 2 days ago. Don’t allow people to keep you in your past & in bondage.

There are people who are broken and we must stop allowing people that are broken to break us.

Be careful of who you allow to speak over & in your life. Everyone is not for you and some people will speak words to you to break your spirit, have you doubtful or fearful and prevent you from not receiving all that God has for you because they have a stronghold over your mind and spirit. I can’t stress this enough but words are powerful, words have life and death. Even when speaking to yourself be mindful.

Affirmations:

God is my strength - Psalm 37:39

My steps are established by God- Psalm 40:2

I am blessed with every spiritual blessing- Ephesians 1:3

I am forgiven- Ephesians 1:7

My heart and mind have peace - Philippians 4:7

I am chosen by God- Ephesians 1:4

God wants me to prosper in ALL things- 3 John 1:2

I can see beauty in everything- Ecclesiastes 3:11

When I am weak, I am strong- 2 Corinthians 12:10

There may be times you may need to sit with yourself and ask “ who said that” was it sent from God? or what is from man and someone who is broken and/or not for me? One thing I can say is that God will never say anything that will push you away from him or doubt him for who he is.
